Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Showdown

The boardroom was on the top floor of Hale Industries' headquarters, a massive room with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. A long mahogany table dominated the center, surrounded by leather chairs. At the head of the table sat my father. At his right hand—an empty chair, reserved for me.
I arrived in my wheelchair, pushed by Clara. Vanessa and Daniel were already there, sitting on the opposite side of the table, flanked by the board members they had managed to buy off or intimidate. The rest of the board looked at me with a mixture of pity and doubt.

"Ethan," my father said, his voice strong. "Good of you to join us."

"Wouldn't miss it," I said, as Clara wheeled me to my place at the table. She gave my shoulder a quick, reassuring squeeze and then stepped back to stand against the wall, where Marcus and two other security guards were positioned.

Vanessa smiled at me, a cold, triumphant smile. She knew what she was going to do. She thought she had already won.

Daniel leaned back in his chair, his arms crossed over his chest, and gave me a sympathetic look that made my skin crawl. "Ethan, we're all very glad you could make it. I know these things can be... difficult... for you in your condition."

"Let's get started," my father said, cutting him off. "You all know why we're here. After thirty years as CEO of Hale Industries, I have decided to retire."

A murmur went around the table, though everyone had known this was coming.

"It is my belief," my father continued, "that this company needs new leadership. Younger leadership. And there is no one more qualified, no one who understands this company better than my son, Ethan. I am formally nominating him to be the next CEO of Hale Industries."

He looked around the table. "All those in favor?"

Before anyone could speak, Daniel raised his hand.

"With all due respect, sir," he said, his voice loud and clear, "I think we need to discuss Ethan's... fitness... for this position before we take a vote."

The room went silent.

"Fitness?" my father asked, his voice icy.

Daniel nodded, standing up. "We all love Ethan. He's my best friend. But the fact is, since the accident, he's not the man he used to be. He's confined to a wheelchair. He can't even walk into a meeting on his own. How can he run a billion-dollar company when he can't even take care of himself?"

He looked around the table, his voice gaining strength. "And it's not just his physical condition. I have reports from his doctors—concerns about his mental health, about his ability to make sound decisions under pressure. This company deserves a leader who is strong. Who is present. Who can guide us through the challenges ahead."

He gestured to himself. "I have been with this company for ten years. I know every department, every client, every employee. And I am ready. I am ready to step up and lead Hale Industries into the future."

He sat down, and Vanessa applauded softly. A few of the board members nodded, looking thoughtful.

"Is that all?" my father asked.

"Actually," Vanessa said, standing up now, "there's more."

She reached into her briefcase and pulled out a stack of papers. "These are medical records. From Ethan's doctors. They confirm what Daniel has said. Ethan's condition is... permanent. And his mental state is fragile. To put him in charge of this company would be not just irresponsible—it would be dangerous."

She slid the papers across the table to my father. He looked at them, then looked at me.

"Ethan," he said. "Do you have anything to say to these allegations?"

I looked around the room. At Daniel, who was smiling smugly. At Vanessa, who was radiating triumph. At the board members, who were looking at me with doubt in their eyes. At Clara, who was standing against the wall, her face pale but her eyes steady.

And then I smiled.

"Actually," I said, my voice loud and clear, "I have quite a lot to say."

I gestured to Marcus. He nodded and pressed a button on a remote control. The lights in the room dimmed, and a large screen at the front of the room lit up.

"Daniel says I'm not fit to run this company," I said. "He says I'm weak. Broken. But before we talk about my fitness, maybe we should talk about his."

The screen changed to show bank records. Large sums of money, moving from Hale Industries accounts to offshore accounts, all signed off by Daniel.

"For the past three years," I said, "Daniel has been embezzling from this company. Small amounts at first, then larger and larger. Over eighteen million dollars in total. Money that was supposed to go to research and development. To employee bonuses. To our clients."

Daniel's face went white. "That's... that's not true. Those records are fake."

"Are they?" I asked. I gestured to Marcus again. The screen changed again, this time showing a video. Daniel, in a private room, handing an envelope full of cash to a man identified as a board member. "Is this fake too?"

The board member in question looked down, avoiding everyone's eyes.

"And there's more," I said. The screen changed again, showing text messages. Explicit messages between Daniel and Vanessa. Messages about their affair. Messages about me.

He's so easy to fool, one from Vanessa read. He actually thinks I love him.

Once we have the company, Daniel responded, we can get rid of him. Send him somewhere no one will find him.

A gasp went around the room. Vanessa's face was now as white as Daniel's.

"You..." she whispered, staring at me. "How did you—"

"And then there's this," I said, cutting her off. The screen changed one last time. A video, taken the night before. Vanessa, in my room, sitting on my bed, her hand on my leg, offering me a deal.

You step aside for Daniel, her voice came through the speakers. And we keep our engagement. I could make you happy, Ethan. In ways you can't even imagine.

The room was dead silent.

Vanessa looked like she was about to be sick. Daniel was staring at the screen, his mouth open in shock.

"You recorded me," Vanessa whispered.

"I recorded everything," I said. "Every conversation. Every meeting. Every lie. Because I knew what you were. Both of you. Long before the accident, I knew. But the accident gave me the perfect opportunity to let you show your true colors. To let you hang yourselves."

I looked at Daniel. "You were my best friend. My brother. And you betrayed me. For money. For power. For her."

I looked at Vanessa. "You were supposed to be my wife. The woman I loved. And you were planning to lock me away. To make me disappear."

I paused, letting my words sink in.

"And now," I said, "you want to talk about fitness? You want to talk about who is qualified to run this company?"

I placed my hands on the arms of my wheelchair. And then, slowly, deliberately, I stood up.

A collective gasp went around the room. Board members stood up in their chairs. Vanessa and Daniel stared at me, their eyes wide with shock and horror.

I stepped out from behind the wheelchair. I walked around it, my steps strong and sure, and stood at the head of the table, beside my father.

"I'm not broken," I said, my voice ringing through the room. "I'm not weak. And I'm more than qualified to run this company."

I looked at Daniel. "You're fired. Effective immediately. Security will escort you from the building. And the authorities will be in touch about the embezzlement charges."

I looked at Vanessa. "And we are done. The engagement is over. I want you out of my house by the end of the day. And if I ever see you again, I will have you arrested for conspiracy to commit fraud and kidnapping."

Daniel started to speak, to protest, but Marcus and the other security guards were already moving toward him. They grabbed his arms and pulled him out of the room, shouting and struggling.

Vanessa stood frozen, staring at me, tears streaming down her face. "You... you pretended. All this time, you pretended."

"I did," I said. "And you walked right into my trap. Because you were too arrogant, too greedy, to see what was right in front of you."

I nodded to Marcus. "Escort Ms. Sterling out as well."

The guards moved toward her. She tried to run, to get to me, to beg, but they caught her arms and pulled her away. Her screams echoed down the hallway long after the door had closed behind them.

I turned to face the board. They were all staring at me, their mouths open in shock.

"I know this has been... unexpected," I said. "And I know some of you had doubts about me. Some of you even supported Daniel. But I am asking you now—put all of that aside. I am asking you to vote. To vote for me as CEO of Hale Industries. To vote for the future of this company."

I looked around the table, meeting each board member's eyes.

"All those in favor?"

One by one, hands went up. Every single one of them.

My father smiled, a proud, cold smile. "The ayes have it. Ethan Hale is the new CEO of Hale Industries."

The room erupted in applause. I looked past the board members, past the table, to the back of the room.

Clara was standing there, tears streaming down her face, a smile on her lips. She mouthed three words.

I love you.

I mouthed them back.

May you like

I love you too.

The showdown was over. The victory was mine. But as I looked at Clara, I knew that the best part of my life was just beginning.
