Chapter 4 - The Trap is Set

The day before the board meeting, the tension in the house was thick enough to cut with a knife. Vanessa was everywhere, her smile too bright, her laughter too loud, moving through the rooms like a queen surveying her kingdom. Daniel was right beside her, his hand resting a little too familiarly on her back, his eyes cold and calculating whenever he looked at me. They thought they had won. They thought the board meeting was just a formality, a rubber stamp on their takeover. They had no idea what was coming.

Clara was my shadow, moving silently through the house, gathering information, passing me notes about conversations she had overheard, meetings she had seen. She told me that Vanessa had been on the phone with someone from the press, leaking stories about my "deteriorating health" and "questionable mental state." She told me Daniel had met with three board members at a private club downtown, handing over envelopes that were no doubt filled with cash.

And she told me something else. Something that made my blood run cold.

"They're talking about after," she whispered to me that afternoon, her voice trembling. "Vanessa said... she said once Daniel is CEO, she doesn't want you in the house anymore. She said she wants you sent away. To a... a facility. Somewhere no one will find you."

I stared at her. "A facility?"

She nodded, tears in her eyes. "She said you're too dangerous. That you might try to fight back if you're left free. Daniel said he'd make the arrangements. He said he has a doctor who will sign the papers."

I felt a cold rage build in my chest. They weren't just going to take my company and my money. They were going to lock me away. To make me disappear.

"Not if I disappear them first," I said.

That night, Marcus came to my room. He was a big man, with a scar across his left cheek and eyes that missed nothing. He had been my father's head of security before he became mine, and he was loyal to a fault.

"Everything is in place," he said, setting a folder on my bed. "The documents are ready. The witnesses are prepared. The tech team will be in the boardroom an hour before the meeting to set up the equipment."

He glanced at the door, where Clara was standing watch. "And the girl? She knows the plan?"

"She knows what she needs to know," I said.

Marcus nodded. "She's brave. Most people would have run the other way."

"She's not like most people," I said, and I meant it.

Marcus left, and Clara came back into the room, closing the door behind her. She sat down beside me on the bed, her hand finding mine.

"I'm scared," she admitted.

"Me too," I said. "But we're going to win. I promise you."

She leaned her head on my shoulder. "I know. I just... I don't want anything to happen to you."

"Nothing will," I said, kissing the top of her head. "I have too much to live for now."

We sat like that for a long time, holding each other, drawing strength from one another. For the first time since the accident, I didn't feel alone. I had Clara. I had my father. I had Marcus. And I had justice within my reach.

But Vanessa wasn't done yet.

At nine o'clock that night, she came to my room. She was wearing a silk robe, her hair loose around her shoulders, and for a moment, I could almost see the woman I had once thought I loved. The woman I had planned to marry.

But then she opened her mouth.

"Ethan," she said, her voice soft, seductive. "I've been thinking. About us. About our future."

She walked over to the bed and sat down, her hand resting on my leg through the blanket. I had to fight the urge to pull away.

"Maybe I've been too hard on you," she continued, her fingers tracing circles on my thigh. "Maybe we can work something out. A partnership."

I raised an eyebrow. "A partnership?"

She smiled, leaning closer. "You step aside for Daniel. Let him run the company for a few years. But you stay on. As a consultant. An advisor. You keep your title, your prestige. And we... we keep our engagement. We get married. We have the life we always planned."

She leaned in even closer, her lips brushing against my ear. "I could make you happy, Ethan. In ways you can't even imagine. All you have to do is say yes."

I stared at her. She was actually trying to seduce me. To manipulate me into giving up my birthright with promises of sex and status. It was pathetic. And it was perfect.

"And what about Daniel?" I asked, playing along.

Vanessa waved a hand dismissively. "Daniel is useful. For now. But once he's served his purpose... well, he's not you, Ethan. He never was."

She kissed my neck, and I had to fight every instinct in my body not to push her away. Not to stand up and reveal everything right then and there.

"Think about it," she whispered, standing up. "Tomorrow, before the meeting. Give me your answer. And if you say yes... I'll make sure all of this unpleasantness goes away."

She left, closing the door softly behind her.

I sat there, my skin crawling, and reached for my phone. I called Marcus.

"Change of plans," I said. "We're moving up the timeline. I want everything ready to go first thing in the morning. And I want you to make sure Vanessa's little proposal is captured on tape. Every word."

I hung up and looked at Clara, who had been standing in the shadows, watching everything. Her face was pale, her eyes filled with anger.

"She's disgusting," Clara said.

"She's desperate," I corrected. "And desperate people make mistakes. And tomorrow, she's going to make the biggest mistake of her life."

Clara came to the bed and sat down, taking my face in her hands. "I don't ever want you to touch her again. Not even for the act."

I kissed her, hard and passionate, letting her feel everything I felt for her. The love, the desire, the need.

"I only want you," I said when we pulled apart. "Only you, Clara. Always."

She rested her forehead against mine. "Tomorrow," she whispered. "Tomorrow it ends."

"Tomorrow," I agreed.

That night, I didn't sleep. I lay in bed, going over the plan again and again in my head, making sure every detail was perfect. Clara slept in the chair beside the bed, refusing to leave me, her hand resting on mine.

When the sun came up, I woke her gently.

"It's time," I said.

May you like

She sat up, rubbing her eyes, and looked at me. There was no fear in her face now. Only determination.

"Let's go get them," she said.
