WE GOT HIM' — FBI Director Kash Patel Announces Blockbuster Arrest
WASHINGTON, D.C. — FBI Director Kash Patel announced that federal authorities seized enough fentanyl in 2025 to potentially cause 178 million fatal overdoses. He also reported a significant decline in opioid-related overdose deaths during the previous year. Patel credited coordinated enforcement operations targeting transnational criminal organizations and drug trafficking networks for the results.
According to Patel, the bureau and partner agencies have intensified efforts since January 20, 2025, following executive directives to pursue the elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations operating within the United States. In February 2025, the State Department designated several cartels and gangs as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists. The FBI subsequently established a Counter Cartel Coordination Center to improve intelligence sharing and operational coordination.
Since January 20, 2025, federal authorities have reported more than 25,000 immigration-related arrests, including 350 members of the Tren de Aragua gang and 195 members of MS-13. Drug seizures during this period include 66,600 kilograms of cocaine, 6,675 kilograms of methamphetamine, and 1,500 kilograms of fentanyl. In March, authorities apprehended Francisco Javier Roman-Bardales, an MS-13 leader on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list, in Mexico.
Provisional data cited by officials shows opioid overdose deaths fell from approximately 72,776 in 2023 to 48,422 in 2024. Fentanyl remains the leading cause of death for Americans ages 18 to 45, with varying rates across demographic groups. Federal officials have attributed the reported decline in part to increased interdiction, maritime seizures, and enhanced cooperation among federal, state, local, and international partners.
Patel highlighted the role of expanded task forces, which now include more than 9,000 federal, state, local, Tribal, and territorial law enforcement participants. He noted that embedding officers from across the country at FBI headquarters has improved coordination. The bureau maintains more than 35,000 direct-funded positions across 55 field offices.

Officials have stated that sustained enforcement, prosecution, and international cooperation will be necessary to maintain progress.
